Yes, although he doesn’t mean to sound condescending. Kai is fully aware of his privilege and never flaunts it or looks down on others. And as emperor he is constantly reminded of the reality of life for poorer people when he is doing charity work and passing economic bills. So when he does make a rich kid™ comment, it’s completely out of ignorance and with no ill-intent.
When he makes such comments and his friends explain that they cannot financially accommodate such things, his instinctive response is “oh, then I’ll buy it for you.” They mostly reject him because that’s not the right solution; you can’t have everything in life and you will have to sacrifice some things for others. Believing otherwise only nurtures bad habits.
This occurs less once he marries Cinder. Although she’s now rich, she still has the mindset on money that she had when she was living under Adri and with limited access to her own earned wages. Kai will suggest that they go out for dates once a week and each time he books an expensive restaurant, the absolute best seats at the theatre or a concert, and then rents out an entire art gallery so they can browse without paparazzi. Cinder is fine with these things–sometimes. When he starts to do this every time, she pulls him by the collar, says, “whoa whoa whoa, who do you think we are? Royalty or something?” “Cinder, we are royalty.” “Doesn’t mean we should use up the whole city’s resources in one evening!”
She teaches him that a stroll through the gardens or ice creams by the beach are just as enjoyable as expensive activities. He only did all this because he wanted to treat her, but it’s abundantly clear that Cinder does not need fancy things to be impressed.
Other times when he makes slightly tone deaf comments, Cinder or Jacin or Thorne or even the others will something to the effect of: “hey rich kid, welcome to the real world.” (Thorne actually says something like this in canon, “hey mister-born-into-royalty, what do you know about it?”)
But it’s not only Kai; Winter sometimes makes ignorant comments, Wolf sometimes lacks awareness of what’s socially acceptable because he grew up in an abnormal environment. Cress often puts her foot in her mouth because she doesn’t understand the average Earthen lifestyle. Cinder’s sarcasm and Scarlet’s anger always get them in trouble. Jacin has to become more polite so as to not offend his patients. Thorne’s flippant flirting lands him in the bad books when people take it seriously and then he has to awkwardly explain that he’s not actually interested in them. They’re all imperfect, and rather than hinder each other, they choose to overlook those flaws and build each other up instead. Iko is an android and therefore perfect 😜 (but maybe because she was programmed to love Kai and is very clearly attracted to him, Cinder might ask her at some point to tone it down, because he IS her husband).
